Drawn small, then stretched
Grit began as a text face for footnotes — tight, unglamorous, made to hold at eight point on cheap paper. We drew the regular weight first and only then pulled it outward along the weight axis until the joints started to fail.
Instead of correcting the failures, we kept them. The display weights carry the flat spots and pinched corners that appeared under strain, which is where the family gets its name and most of its character.
Family
Six weights on a variable axis, with italics, tabular figures, and a specimen printed letterpress so people could see it break properly.
